Master Thesis - Robot Design

This study is part of my master thesis and is about robot design. It will take you about 20 - 30 minutes to go through all the questions. Thank you in advance for participating!

Subject information to the master thesis: Robot design

Dear Participant,

Welcome to the questionnaire on robot design - thank you for supporting this scientific research!

This study is part of a master thesis of the TUM Chair of Ergonomics. The subject of this study is research on robot design. On the basis of different evaluation methods, different designs of robots will be analyzed. The following test will take approximately 20 - 30 minutes and can be performed either on PC or Tablet devices. A good command of the English language is required to complete the test.

Your participation in the study is voluntary. If you do not wish to participate or if you later withdraw your consent, you will not suffer any disadvantages. Please read through each task at your leisure and answer them. The data collection is exclusively for evaluation purposes of the robots' design. You as a test person can do nothing wrong.

Motivation

As there are more and more robots, people come upon different types of robots in their everyday life. The interaction between human and robot should be as easy as possible for the human, to actually improve their life and not make it more complicated. If the look and first impression of a robot matches its actual abilities, the human can easily develop a fitting mental model about the robot, which helps the interaction and makes it more enjoyable. The aim of this work is to analyze which impact the design of a robot has on the impression humans get about the robot’s abilities.

Procedure

Your participation in the study is terminated after a single appointment. The study takes place completely online.
During the experiment, you are asked to fulfill 7 parts. In the first six parts the image of a robot will be shown, and a questionnaire will be served for you to answer about your impression of the robot. In the end there will be a short questionnaire about yourself and your experience with robots. Including the instructions, a total time expenditure of approx. 20 - 30 minutes can be expected.

Personal benefit

The subjects will not be compensated financially for participating in this study. The results of the study may however help other people in the future.

Risks

There are no risks involved in participating in the study.

Voluntariness

Participation in the study is voluntary. If you do not wish to participate, you can stop at any given moment.

Data Security

In this study the TUM Chair of Ergonomics is responsible for data processing. The legal basis for the processing of your data is your consent.

The data collected from you consists exclusively of the answers you give to the questions in this online study. A collected, anonymized data set is stored in the not publicly accessible database of the test procedure and then transferred in anonymized form to the evaluation of scientific studies.

Your personal data will only be used within the scope of this study. No data directly identifying you as a person will be collected or processed.

Your data will be stored by the Chair of Ergonomics in the archive of the Leibniz Rechenzentrum. The data is stored in compliance with the Privacy policy in anonymous form. Your data will be deleted after expiry of the statutory deletion periods (in agreement with the principles of good scientific practice after ten years).

Consent to the processing of your data is voluntary.
